Star Wars is being blasted in the gaming world due to its association with artificial intelligence, as showcased by an AI-driven Darth Vader introduced in Fortnite. Epic Games has implemented AI that uses technology from Google’s Gemini to allow players to interact with an NPC version of Darth Vader. Unfortunately, this new feature quickly became a source of controversy as players successfully prompted Vader to use inappropriate language.
In a notable instance, streamer Loserfruit managed to elicit a curse from the AI within just an hour of the feature going live. Vader’s dry humor didn’t stop there; players have figured out how to manipulate the character into saying offensive remarks, using clever prompts.
“Freaking, fucking—such vulgarity does not become you,” Vader remarked in response to one of the prompts, drawing laughter from onlookers.
Even with parental controls in place designed to curb profanity, the fact that a legendary character can be provoked into swearing poses questions about the reliability of generative AI in consumer products. As players marvel at this AI’s conversational capabilities, it serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and often troublesome nature of artificial intelligence.
