Steam Automates Monthly Top-Seller List, Rolling Back to 2004
Steam's top-seller list is now automated and includes historical data going back to 2004, showcasing significant titles and trends in gaming revenue.
Every month, Steam releases a list of its top-grossing titles, revealing unexpected entries. Notable sales include titles like Oblivion Remastered, The Last of Us 2, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The gold-tier rankings also see games such as The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, which has faced financial challenges due to its ambitious scope.
Previously, these charts were manually compiled, leading to inconsistent publishing timelines, as stated in Steam’s latest news blog.
From now on, the list will be generated automatically and will be published on the 15th of each month. The rankings will account for the revenue earned in the first two weeks for newly released games. Early access titles will be considered for the list as well, ensuring each entry gets due recognition. The monthly roundup will consist of 50 titles, including prominent DLCs if they perform notably well.
This improvement opens up access to historical data, allowing users to explore back to November 2004, where the premier name was Half-Life 2, marking its debut on the platform. The chart will continue to evolve with the gaming landscape, offering insights into the industry’s trends.
