Baldur’s Gate 3 Remediation Patch Discreetly Eliminates Unintended Story Elements

The latest hotfix for Baldur's Gate 3 removes dialogue that revealed a scrapped storyline.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 8 introduced various enhancements, including numerous new subclasses; however, players unexpectedly uncovered new dialogue following its release. A conversation involving a specific character hinted at an unpublished narrative element that wasn’t actually present in the game. After weeks of speculation, Larian has released a hotfix today that resolves this issue.

In the patch notes for hotfix 31, it states that it rectifies “some defunct dialogue that mistakenly made its way into Minthara’s Speak with Dead dialogue in Patch 8.” Clips of the scene before removal featured a lifeless Minthara mentioning she was supposed to be a mother, suggesting this plot point was never meant to be included in the final version of the game.

Speculation arose after additional cut dialogues in 2023 indicated characters referring to Minthara’s child. “Minthara with child,” Shadowheart states in the datamined speech, “Somehow I can’t picture her knitting baby booties around the campfire.”

There remains uncertainty about how this would fit into the game. It’s plausible that the player’s character could have been involved or that Larian drafted a complete storyline for Minthara that will remain unseen. With today’s removal, it is evident this material accidentally slipped into Patch 8.

Larian previously indicated their intent to expand the endings in 2023, asserting the team was “pretty strict” about the elements that find their way into the game. “If it isn’t good—if it isn’t fun to play—it doesn’t make it to the game,” they wrote.

While unused dialogues like Minthara’s can spark intrigue, they do not always signify the loss of something enjoyable. If Larian deemed it uninteresting, it likely wasn’t captivating in their eyes. Nevertheless, there is a desire to see the developers discuss such material that progressed far enough to be fully voice-acted, just to understand why it was deemed unsuitable for the narrative they wished to convey.
