Morrowind Modders Impress with New Physics Engine for Classic Game

Morrowind modders have developed an impressive physics engine with 'pure lua', adding new capabilities to the classic game that has been around for 23 years.

Morrowind may be a 23-year-old game, yet it remains relevant thanks to a fanatical community. Recently, modder MaxYari has implemented a rudimentary physics engine using pure lua, allowing for entertaining mechanics where items can be manipulated in surprising ways.

MaxYari describes it as a “simple and naive physics engine in pure lua” with capabilities reminiscent of Half-Life 1 physics. This includes interactive elements like dragging and throwing objects and the ability to break bottles, pushing the game into a realm of fun experimentation within the beloved Elder Scrolls universe.

However, there are some caveats; ranged attacks do not affect physics objects, and NPCs pass through static items. MaxYari encourages fellow modders to utilize this physics engine to enhance their own modifications, revamping the nostalgic experience of visiting Vvardenfell.
