It seems that more devices running SteamOS could be on the horizon. Valve has announced that they will introduce a new game compatibility rating for titles that will run on non-Steam Deck devices. This initiative is set to coincide with the launch of the Lenovo Legion Go S, which utilizes Valve’s SteamOS.
Valve plans to initially approve over 18,000 Steam games and will include this rating for all titles tested against the Steam Deck going forward. The compatibility assessments will rely on a subset of test results from Steam Deck to illustrate whether a game and its middleware are supported on SteamOS. This will reflect in features such as game functionality, launcher functionality, and compatibility with anti-cheat measures.
However, it’s essential to note that these new ratings will only appear for users on compatible devices like the Legion Go S; they will be listed alongside the Steam Deck verification status and will highlight whether a game can operate on SteamOS, including any necessary internet connection details.
Valve is committed to providing clarity around which games are compatible with various devices, a step crucial for the successful rollout of SteamOS beyond the Steam Deck. This rating system will function similarly to the compatibility information available on app stores for iOS and Android, aiming to assist users in understanding which games are playable on specific devices.
In previous discussions, Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais indicated that while there are no strict plans for SteamOS’ future on other hardware, the focus remains on handheld devices for now. As Valve begins to expand SteamOS, clarity on game compatibility will undoubtedly play a crucial role.
