Rift Riff: A Refreshing Take on Tower Defense Games
The game Rift Riff has just launched on Steam, allowing players to step into a whimsical world filled with juice extraction and tower defenses. In this engaging tower defense game, you play as a klutzy wizard who unexpectedly falls through a wormhole into another realm.
As the player, your first task is to set up an extractor—essentially a tower that collects juice from the land. With a starting budget, you can strategically place defensive towers that fend off approaching monsters. This game is part of a growing genre of tower defense titles, joining the ranks of games like Thronefall and Gnomes, and it’s considered remarkably forgiving.
One of Rift Riff’s unique features is the ability to refund towers at full cost, receive back any lost towers at the beginning of a wave, and respawn from the start of that wave without losing your built defenses. Additionally, players can collect flowers for extra juice during gameplay.
The charming aspects of this title, such as its delightful music and humorous character movements, stand out. Co-creator Adriaan de Jongh previously contributed to Hidden Folks, a game that, while different in genre, shares a similar whimsical charm with its interactive character elements.
For those interested in exploring charming, low-fi tower defense experiences, Rift Riff is currently available for around $6 on Steam. Players can also opt for a bundle that includes both Rift Riff and Thronefall for a satisfying gaming experience.
