Following the dispute at Giant Bomb, ownership shifts to its creators

Fandom has strategically sold Giant Bomb to two key staff members amid ongoing tensions.

In October 2022, the gaming site Giant Bomb was acquired by Fandom, which also took over GameSpot and Metacritic, among others. However, this year saw a rift between Fandom and the editorial staff over a halt in new content as part of a broader strategic realignment. This conflict culminated in the removal of a podcast episode where the staff humorously addressed Fandom’s brand safety concerns.

At PAX East, a surprising announcement was made: Giant Bomb has been sold by Fandom to two of its key staff members, Jeff Bakalar and Jeff Grubb, who will run it independently moving forward. As they expressed, ‘Giant Bomb is now owned by the people who make Giant Bomb, thanks to the quick response of Fandom and a mutual understanding of what is best for both fans and creators.’

Fandom stated that this strategic decision aims to bring Giant Bomb back to its independent roots, now managed by its long-term creators.

A source of funding for the site will come from subscriptions and merchandise sales.
