Cybersecurity firm Hive Systems has released its 2025 Password Table, analyzing the ease with which passwords can be cracked. While the findings are disconcerting, the silver lining is that most users can enhance their password security by merely adding more characters.
Employing a long password strategy is fundamental, preferably with unique variations for each service that incorporate numbers, lowercase, uppercase, and symbols.
Hive Systems notes: “Nvidia has launched the new consumer GPU, the RTX 5090. To approximate a proficient hacker, we tested the power of twelve RTX 5090s.”
Results indicate that a password composed of eight characters utilizing only lowercase letters and numbers can be cracked in just three weeks. Introducing uppercase letters can extend this to 15 years, integrating numbers pushes it to 62 years, and symbols increase the timeframe to 164 years.
With 18 characters—regardless of using only numbers—twelve high-performance GPUs would take 284,000 years to breach. The disparity illustrates how character count significantly influences password strength.
As per NIST recommendations, a minimum of 15 characters is ideal. Attackers leveraging advanced computing resources are more than capable of cracking weak passwords, further emphasizing the importance of robust password policies that incorporate a mix of character types, lengths, and complexity.
