LG Introduces Innovative Stretchable OLED Technology for Automotive Displays

LG's new stretchable OLED display technology aims to revolutionize automotive interiors, merging displays and controls seamlessly.

Bendable and even foldable screens are already common, but stretchable screens represent the next stage in OLED panel technology. LG has introduced a new stretchable OLED panel designed specifically for automobiles, which promises to transform previously button-heavy surfaces into expansive displays.

LG claims that their new stretchable OLED panel can expand up to 50%, all while retaining a pixel density of 100 DPI. While they haven’t disclosed the panel’s native pixel density, it’s assumed to be higher than 100 DPI and shifts to that level when stretched.

“A conventional vehicle’s center fascia area requires a separate automotive display and physical buttons. With the application of a stretchable display, however, the screen can freely expand, allowing the display and buttons to merge seamlessly into a single screen,” LG explains.

When touched, the flat display should flexibly expand to reveal touch buttons, enhancing usability even during driving. The potential exists to modify graphical elements to adjust for the “stretch” effect, presenting a fascinating interplay between touchscreen and traditional controls.

The automotive industry is currently grappling with integrating touchscreens and physical controls effectively. Notable electric vehicle brands, including Tesla and VW, have faced critique for heavily relying on touchscreens to replace physical buttons for features such as climate controls and audio functions.

Ultimately, if this technology finds success in vehicles, its applications could extend beyond just cars, bringing new innovations in various fields, especially for PC gaming and other uses where flexible displays might enhance user experience.
