Instead of avoiding the newly announced May 2026 release date for GTA 6, indie publisher Devolver Digital is choosing to confront it head-on.
This weekend, Devolver shared a message on X following the GTA 6 release date announcement, declaring, “You can’t escape us. May 26, 2026 it is then.”
This remark was a nod to a prior message from March where Devolver casually stated, “Gonna release a game the exact same day and time as GTA 6.”
While most publishers are trying to steer clear of GTA 6’s release, Devolver seeks to create a notable moment reminiscent of the ironic competition between Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal, which coincidentally launched on the same day in March 2020. The contrast between the two titles highlighted a unique marketing tactic, and the same could happen with whatever Devolver plans to release.
Devolver is known for its impressive indie game catalog, including hits like Cult of the Lamb, Death’s Door, and The Talos Principle. If any publisher can successfully launch an indie title on GTA 6’s release day, it’s likely to be Devolver.
The game that will contend against GTA 6 remains under wraps, but possibilities include Enter the Gungeon 2 or other similar themed titles, like Hotline Miami 3, which has not yet been announced.
This could turn into an intriguing scenario, especially if Rockstar decides to delay GTA 6 again, giving Devolver the chance to release its game on time, thus further stirring the anticipation among gamers.
