EVE Online Developer's Unusual Tribute: An Epic Poem Inscribed with Players' Blood

CCP Games is set to honor EVE Online's community by crafting a unique manuscript utilizing the blood of its players, alongside traditional poetic methods.

At the end of this year’s EVE Fanfest, CCP Games’ CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson made an extraordinary announcement. The studio will create a unique manuscript inspired by the ancient Icelandic sagas, but with a twist: it will be crafted using the blood of EVE Online fans. As part of its dedication, CCP plans to donate the majority of this blood to the Blood Bank of Iceland.

“We’re obsessing about this ‘foreverness,’” stated Pétursson. “It turns out, to store information, a really good way is to take blood and write on calfskin. People in Iceland have been doing this for a millennium, and their books still exist.”

The poem, titled Foundational Poem, aims to encapsulate critical aspects of EVE’s history, and will be edited by Icelandic author Andri Snær Magnason, drawing from diverse literary traditions globally.

At Fanfest, it was revealed that fans could offer blood donations, with the Blood Bank in attendance, and CCP intends to incorporate this into the manuscript. Pétursson mentioned that limited versions of the manuscript would be crafted in a classical style, and one would be placed in the Icelandic manuscript museum, alongside the sagas.

Those eager to participate can look forward to the next Fanfest in May 2026, where they will have the opportunity to contribute their blood to this remarkable project.

This is not the first initiative by CCP to celebrate its community; in the past, they commissioned a monument listing every EVE player’s name, marking a decade of the game.

EVE Online is poised for its new expansion, Legion, launching on May 27, which highlights CCP’s continuous efforts in enhancing its gaming experience.
