After Winning Against Apple, Epic Announces Major Fee Reductions for Developers

Epic Games is reforming its store policies to benefit developers by lowering fees and introducing new webshop features to compete against Apple's high charges.

After Epic’s significant courtroom victory over Apple earlier this week, the company has unveiled crucial adjustments to its store policies aimed at attracting more developers. This decision serves as both a strategic move to enhance Epic’s competitiveness and a response to the ongoing high fees levied by Apple and Google.

Key Changes

  • Reduced Fees: Epic will now take a 0% commission on the first $1 million in earnings per application annually, after which a 12% fee will apply. Previously, the standard for most platforms, such as Steam, was considerably higher (30% up to $10 million in revenue).

These adjustments particularly benefit smaller, indie developers who have struggled with high revenue shares traditionally taken by larger platforms.

Introducing Webshops

Moreover, Epic plans to launch new “webshops” that will allow developers to offer players additional purchasing options outside of app stores, bypassing the exorbitant fees typically charged by Apple and Google. Epic stated, “These webshops can offer players out-of-app purchases as a more cost-effective alternative to in-app purchases, where Apple, Google, and others charge exorbitant fees.”

This strategy builds on a recent legal victory where Epic secured the right for iOS app developers to link to external payment systems without incurring Apple’s usual fees. Epic aims to enable developers to maximize their earnings effectively without the hurdle of high commissions.

Conclusion

Epic’s new revenue share policy and webshop introduction aim to enhance the developer experience by reducing financial barriers. They are set to be implemented in June, promising a more equitable environment for creators in the gaming industry.
