AMD and Samsung Showcase 8K 120 Hz Gaming – Is It Worth the Hype?

A look at the recent demonstration of 8K 120 Hz gaming by AMD and Samsung, evaluating its practicality and impact on current gaming technology.

AMD and Samsung recently demonstrated what might be a groundbreaking development in gaming technology: 8K 120 Hz gaming over HDMI. This demonstration took place during the NAB show in Las Vegas, organized by the 8K Association. A special version of the Samsung Neo QLED 8K TV was used alongside an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and a Ryzen 9800X3D CPU from MainGear.

The showcased game was Horizon Forbidden West, delivered at 5K and then upscaled to 8K using AMD’s FSR 3 technology. While the technical capabilities sound impressive, the practical benefits of 8K resolutions for gaming remain debatable.

Many gamers may not perceive significant differences between 4K and 8K, especially without the appropriate screen sizes. As gaming technology continues evolving, many question the true necessity of 8K gaming and whether it will become mainstream. The HDMI 2.1b interface with DSC or Display Stream Compression facilitated the required bandwidth for this technology, making the astounding claims of enhanced gaming realities a point of interest among industry experts and enthusiasts.
