Nexon Secures StarCraft License While Distributing New Overwatch Mobile Game
Nexon triumphs in the contest for the StarCraft license and also gets distribution rights for a new Blizzard mobile game dubbed Overwatch 3.
In late March, it was revealed that four major South Korean companies were competing to secure the StarCraft license from Blizzard. Companies like NCSoft, Nexon, Netmarble, and Krafton were in the mix, each proposing various ideas to continue the legendary RTS series into the modern gaming space.
MTN, a South Korean financial outlet, has reported that Nexon emerged victorious in this competitive bidding process. Their proposal was characterized as a “unique” interpretation of the StarCraft universe. The deal also grants Nexon the distribution rights for Overwatch mobile, which is being developed by Blizzard. This mobile experience is reportedly a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) and has been informally referred to as “Overwatch 3” by several involved game companies.
There’s much speculation about what direction the new StarCraft game will take under Nexon. Given StarCraft’s immense popularity and cultural significance in South Korea, this move signifies a great opportunity for Nexon in its home market.
Interestingly, Blizzard is also said to have another StarCraft project in development. Previous attempts to branch out from the RTS format had been made but were ultimately scrapped.
With the combination of Nexon’s ambitious plans and the emergence of new titles from Blizzard, the future of the StarCraft franchise appears more vibrant than ever, though fans hope it returns to its strategic roots.
