Swen Vincke Explains Why Larian Didn't Pursue DLC for Baldur's Gate 3

Insights on Larian's direction and its approach to additional content for its hit RPG, Baldur's Gate 3.

The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has catapulted Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, into the spotlight, as he champions a different perspective in the gaming industry. In a recent interview, Vincke was asked about Larian’s decision to forgo additional DLC for the game, despite its widespread acclaim.

He humorously remarked, “It’s boring… is really the honest answer. We tried to be in the DLC business, but there’s just no passion.”

Vincke emphasized the importance of not just satisfying players, but also ensuring developers find joy in their work: “A happy player means a happy business, but you also need a happy developer for that. What we’re doing now makes developers much happier.”

Looking forward, Vincke hinted at being deep in development on Larian’s next ambitious project, making it clear that they are focused on creating an unforgettable experience rather than following the standard practices of the industry, which often leans heavily toward DLC and monetization.

He stated, “We’ve heard we were supposed to do DLC after a huge success, thinking the profits would flood in. But on reflection, we realized what we were actually doing didn’t resonate with us.”

Vincke wrapped up by asserting their excitement for future projects that prioritize both quality and developer satisfaction.
