Finding Red Mushrooms in Stardew Valley: A Comprehensive Guide

Learn the various methods to locate and utilize red mushrooms in Stardew Valley, including their crafting and cooking uses.

There are numerous mushrooms that players can discover in Stardew Valley as the seasons change. While some mushrooms can be used in helpful cooking recipes, others can drain your energy when consumed.

Players may seek Red Mushrooms for bundles and specific crafting recipes. This mushroom is located in a variety of places, but knowing where to look is essential.

Updated on April 26, 2025 by Renri Seong: Red mushrooms are among several forageable items in Stardew Valley, and with the 1.6 update, there are new methods to acquire them. Although not as scarce as the purple variety, red mushrooms are not as prevalent as the more commonly found brown mushrooms. Your chances of finding them are better in the fall. If you unlock Ginger Island, you can potentially farm red mushrooms from two mushroom caves on a single save file. This guide has been updated to reflect all ways to obtain red mushrooms and their uses in Stardew Valley 1.6.

Where to Find Red Mushrooms

Red Mushrooms in Stardew Valley 1.6

As forage items, Red Mushrooms can be found on the Forest Farm during fall. If you didn’t select the Forest Farm, you can find them in the Secret Woods during both summer and fall. To access the Secret Woods, you’ll need to upgrade to a Steel Axe, located in the northwest corner of Cindersap Forest.

While exploring the Mines, you might encounter a Mushroom Floor (from floor 81 upwards). This special floor has a 3.5% chance of appearing when you enter the Mines. Here, you can find both Red and the rarer Purple Mushrooms.

If you’re eager to reliably collect mushroom forageables, consider these alternative methods:

Mushroom Cave (Farm)

After achieving 25,000g in total earnings, Demetrius will visit the following morning. He will offer to use the empty cave on your land for research. You can choose between fruit bats or mushrooms; selecting mushrooms will set up your Farm Cave accordingly.

Once you have chosen the Cave, note that this decision is permanent for that save file. If you opt for fruit bats, you won’t be able to acquire the Mushroom Cave.

The Mushroom Cave has six boxes and a Dehydrator (in version 1.6). Every two in-game days, mushrooms will be automatically collected from the boxes. You can expect to find:

  • Red Mushroom (Common)
  • Purple Mushroom (Rare)
  • Chanterelle (Uncommon)
  • Morel (Uncommon)
  • Common Mushroom (Very Common)

Red Mushrooms have a 12.3% chance of spawning in the cave. While Common Mushrooms are more frequent, you occasionally might find a Red Mushroom or something rarer. If luck is on your side, the Red Mushroom could be of high quality.

Additionally, Red Mushrooms can appear as forage items in the Secret Woods during both summer and fall, especially among the Fiddlehead Ferns, making summer the optimal time to find them.

Mushroom Cave (Ginger Island)

In the 1.5 update, a new location, Ginger Island, was introduced in Stardew Valley. After completing the Community Center or the JojaMart development projects, you gain access to this area, which is divided into sections, accessible by feeding the island parrots Golden Walnuts.

The north section of Ginger Island features the Volcano and a Dig Site, where you will need 10 Golden Walnuts to proceed. Clearing a boulder blocking a cave entrance with a bomb or explosive ammo will unlock the Ginger Island Mushroom Cave, where mushrooms will spawn daily.

Chop Down Mushroom Trees

During the fall, you may experience a rare event where a regular tree can turn into a Mushroom Tree overnight. Cutting down these trees will yield Red Mushrooms; alternatively, if you use a tapper on them, expect to gather Common, Red, and Purple Mushrooms all year round except in winter.

In 1.5, Stardew Valley introduced the Mushroom Tree Seed. Planting these will grow Mushroom Trees on your farm. To obtain a Mushroom Tree Seed, you’ll need to unlock Qi’s Walnut Room on Ginger Island, each costing 5 Qi Gems.
