One of the greatest joys of utilizing a Steam Deck is being able to play games away from your desk while retaining the ability to pick up where you left off. This was my hope with Oblivion Remastered, but disaster struck when my save files vanished.

I discovered I wasn’t alone in this predicament. Upon searching online, including checking Reddit, I found numerous players experiencing the same problem. The manner in which Oblivion manages its save files presently appears to be flawed, leading Bethesda to announce they are currently “investigating” the situation.

Where Are My Save Files?

It seems that, regardless of your save file settings, Oblivion Remastered places its save files in C:\Users[yourusername]\Documents\My Games. If this directory is your default save location, great. For others, including our writer Joshua Wolens, this led to seamless syncing across devices.

If your PC’s configuration resembles mine—pointing saves to a OneDrive Documents folder—you might encounter issues since Oblivion Remastered does not interface properly with that directory. This mismatch could unsettle players thinking they’ve lost gameplay hours, as the game might look for saves in the wrong location.

Fortunately, if you’re using a Steam Deck and wish to access your saves on a PC, it’s relatively straightforward. You can find your Steam Deck saves in your OneDrive folder and transfer them to the proper Documents folder.

In reverse, syncing files back to the Steam Deck from a PC proved more complicated. Repeatedly disabling and enabling cloud saves on both devices was necessary to ensure everything aligned correctly.

The ideal solution could be merely deactivating OneDrive for your Documents folder, per suggestions from redditors. Bethesda needs to rectify the saving system, as the game is anticipated to be both Steam Deck verified and cloud save compatible.
