The Lunar series, created by Game Arts, has a long-standing legacy, with the Lunar Remastered Collection now launched on Steam and consoles. While it stirs nostalgia for many gamers who grew up in the ‘90s, it’s worth noting that the remaster still heavily relies on the original English script from Working Designs.
Fans were expecting significant improvements and a more accurate localization reflective of the original Japanese scripts; however, the updates are minimal.
Working Designs was renowned for their quirky and sometimes excessive localization styles, infamous for adding humorous references like Austin Powers jokes that seem rather dated today.
This edition attempts to remove some of these questionable lines, but it remains true to the original script, which has left many fans divided. Players expecting a fresh and imaginative rework might find themselves disillusioned. Yet, it provides both classic and remastered modes, allowing users to revisit the games with modern enhancements like widened aspect ratios and cleaner cutscenes.
Despite its shortcomings in localization, the remaster still shines as a visually appealing experience, presenting a classic series in a new light while honoring its roots.
