At PC Gamer, we had almost lost hope for new Western Digital SSDs. After a lengthy wait for the much-anticipated Gen 5 Black SSDs, we learned earlier this year that SanDisk would be taking the reins. This was not particularly bad news, as it suggested SanDisk would likely produce a top-notch drive, just without the cherished ‘WD’ branding.
However, whispers of new WD Black drives have resurfaced, hinting at impressive read/write speeds potentially surpassing existing technologies. Recently, we came across a post from a less-known TechX account showcasing specs and linking to an Amazon listing, which was quickly retracted, leaving us cautious but intrigued.
More excitingly, known tech leaker momomo_us recently shared details about a striking-looking WD SSD, referring to it as a 4TB SN8100 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD with a heatsink. The specifications suggest it’s a Gen 5 PCIe 5.0x4, M.2 2280, reaching speeds up to 14,900 MB/s, with the likely code WDS400T1XHM.
While numerous postings of various SSDs have surfaced on Google before disappearing, the detailed specs and credible leaks indicate that we may indeed witness the revival of WD’s celebrated Black series soon.
