Nintendo Pulls Support Claims for Key Feature Before Switch 2 Launch

Nintendo has retracted statements regarding variable refresh rate (VRR) support for the upcoming Switch 2 on multiple regional websites, raising questions about its availability at launch.

Nintendo has begun to erase mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) support from various Switch 2 regional websites. This change hints that the Switch 2 may not feature VRR support upon its launch.

The initial announcement of VRR availability came during the Nintendo Direct on April 2, where it was touted as a capability allowing the console’s display to dynamically adjust its refresh rate, minimizing screen tearing and ensuring a smoother visual experience. However, updates to the U.S, Canadian, and Japanese Switch 2 websites have recently omitted all references to VRR.

This apparent removal, noted by Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie, raises speculation of whether VRR will indeed make it to the console at launch, particularly in docked mode.

Interestingly, while VRR support has been dropped from certain websites, others—like those in the UK and New Zealand—still promote it, suggesting that Nintendo could still be in the process of revising its communication regarding the Switch 2. While Nvidia has confirmed that VRR will be present in handheld mode, its absence in docked mode for the console could be a setback for many users.

Nintendo’s next console is set to hit shelves on June 5, and it is expected to launch with a robust lineup of over 20 titles, including Mario Kart World, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut, and Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster.
