Microsoft Urges Users Not to Delete Mysterious 'inetpub' Folder After Windows Update
Microsoft warns that the recent appearance of an 'inetpub' folder post-Windows 11 update is crucial for system security and should not be removed.
When certain users installed the Windows 11 April 2025 Update, a peculiar empty folder labeled “inetpub” suddenly emerged within their system files. Despite appearing harmless, Microsoft recently urged users not to remove this folder, indicating its connection to essential security measures.
The inetpub directory is typically associated with Internet Information Services (IIS) logs, but its appearance raised eyebrows even among users who did not have this service enabled. Following the installation of the KB5055523 update, this folder manifested without explanation, leading to confusion and, for some, the impulse to delete it.
Microsoft has since updated its support document, making it clear that this folder plays a critical role in system security, stating:
“This folder should not be deleted regardless of whether Internet Information Services (IIS) is active on the target device.”
While the text carries a tone of urgency and importance, the company has not yet clarified why this folder is vital to the security protocols, leaving many users in the dark about its true purpose.
Furthermore, the CVE-2025-21204 vulnerability relates to situations in which attackers could potentially alter system files and folders. By including the inetpub folder in all installations, Microsoft may aim to standardize a defense mechanism against this exploit, although this remains speculative.
For those who have already deleted their inetpub folder, Microsoft suggests that they can restore it by enabling Internet Information Services through the Control Panel, allowing the folder to fulfill its designated function, whatever that may ultimately be.
As the intrigue continues, many users plan to monitor their individual inetpub folders for any unexpected activities or contents.
