God of War composer Bear McCreary recently reflected on his journey with the series. Acclaimed for his work in film and television, featuring projects like Battlestar Galactica and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, he was pivotal for both 2018’s God of War and its sequel, God of War Ragnarok, as well as Call of Duty: Vanguard.
McCreary’s compositions breathed life into the Norse-themed God of War games, capturing the essence of Kratos’s character development as he strives to be a better father to Atreus. The score for God of War Ragnarok received recognition, winning the Best Score and Music at the 2022 Game Awards. Interestingly, McCreary made a cameo in Ragnarok as a Dwarven musician named Raeb.
In a recent conversation with Video Games Chronicle, McCreary discussed his completion of the series work and a sense of closure his music brings to Kratos’s narrative. He declared, “I feel like my contribution… feels complete. I feel complete. I feel like I told a story.”
Nonetheless, hinted at potential future projects, including the Amazon TV adaptation of God of War, he expressed that the production team has his contact information should they want his musical expertise. Given that showrunner Ronald Moore has collaborated with McCreary in the past, future music for the series could be very much on the cards.
In celebration of God of War’s 20th anniversary, Sony is also releasing a collector’s vinyl set encompassing music from the entire franchise, including McCreary’s recent scores. As rumors suggest a new game could return to Kratos’s Greek roots, fans anticipate further announcements.
