Bungie is revealing information about Marathon, its new extraction shooter that has generated interest since its secrecy began in 2023. This title marks Bungie’s return to original game development after eight years, stepping away from the Destiny franchise for a nostalgic journey back to a series that has been inactive since the ’90s.
In a recent stream, the studio shared that Marathon aims to incorporate elements reminiscent of Escape From Tarkov, featuring a peculiar inventory system, faction missions, three-player teams, customizable weapons, and a focus on in-game currency—credits instead of cash.
Despite its competitive nature, Bungie intends for Marathon to provide more than just a monetary incentive. As described by Joe Ziegler, the game is designed to be a “story engine” that fosters engaging narratives even when players head back empty-handed.
“A lot of people who are looking to try an extraction shooter… they just look at the complexity… Is it just me trying to do things and dying over and over again?”
– Joe Ziegler (Translated: A lot of newcomers to extraction shooters tend to overlook the adventure involved, viewing it merely as a cycle of struggle and failure.)
Ziegler also emphasized the discovery aspect, where memorable moments might emerge from not just successes but from unexpected failures as well.
