Reflector Entertainment Confirms Cancellation of Unknown 9: Awakening Follow-up Due to Poor Performance
Reflector Entertainment announces the cancellation of its sequel project and layoffs stemming from the disappointing reception of its debut game, Unknown 9: Awakening.
Reflector Entertainment has announced the cancellation of a sequel project and layoffs following the disappointing results of its initial game, Unknown 9: Awakening. Studio CEO Herve Hoerdt stated that continuing with the project in the “conceptualization phase” would not sustain the studio’s future.
“This decision correlates directly with the failure of the studio’s ambitious and courageous first project [Unknown 9: Awakening], a new IP with a rich transmedia universe,” Hoerdt expressed in a message shared via LinkedIn. He noted that the project’s performance did not meet company expectations despite multiple timeline revisions and investments.
In light of the situation, Hoerdt also pointed out that the layoffs affected back-office staff, summarizing that support teams would now align with the studio’s focus on a single project based on an existing Bandai Namco IP. Reflector previously announced layoffs in November 2024, which were said not to stem from commercial pressures. However, the current developments directly link back to the unsatisfactory performance of Unknown 9.
Though sales figures remain undisclosed, the game’s user reviews on Steam remain lackluster, averaging just 49% positive feedback, which raises concerns about its market viability.
Affected employees are reported to receive thorough severance packages and support arrangements. Reflector’s parent company, Bandai Namco, continues to invest in developing Western-focused content for global audiences.
