Recent data from Canalys shows significant growth in PC sales, which surged nearly 10% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, HP is preparing to transition 90% of its US-based PC production to locations outside of China by the conclusion of this year.
Overall shipments of desktops, notebooks, and workstations reached 62.7 million units, reflecting a 9.4% increase. Notably, HP anticipates that the upcoming tariffs from the Trump administration, currently set at a staggering 145%, will lead to an eventual dip in sales as higher prices come into effect and inventory stabilizes.
Canalys notes that PC manufacturers began moving their production beforehand, a strategy that might mitigate the effect of taxes imposed on imports from China. As Enrique Lores, HP’s CEO, pointed out, this transition will allow for a significant portion of HP’s products sold in the US to be made outside of the heavily taxed region.
