Former Sony Executive Claims Consoles and Gaming PCs Are More Alike Than Ever

Shawn Layden discusses the similarities between gaming consoles and PCs, suggesting the concept of a unified gaming format.

In discussions about the ongoing battle between gaming consoles and personal computers, former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden stated that the two platforms are increasingly similar. He remarked, “Ultimately, I would like the games industry to have the same penetration rate as television sets do.”

Layden argued against the idea of having only three major console manufacturers, advocating for a more unified approach. He compared current consoles to high-end PCs, noting that enhancements between the two are often imperceptible to the average user, saying, “only the dog can hear that.”

As he points out, the convenience of couch gaming is no longer exclusive to consoles, with many games becoming available on PC as well. The distinctions between the two platforms blur, as evident by Nintendo’s difficulties in marketing their new console in a way that differentiates it from portable devices like the Steam Deck.

“Like, ‘we’re gonna have 20% more ray tracing’. Okay?”

Thus, Layden predicts that this is a signal of the end of the console wars, making way for a more harmonious gaming environment.
