Amazon's Tomb Raider Series Reportedly Canceled After Major Investment
The planned Tomb Raider series by Amazon has been reportedly shelved following extensive development costs, leaving many questioning the future of the franchise.
Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of the Tomb Raider series has hit a stumbling block, with reports claiming that the project is effectively canceled after significant investment. According to sources, the development has burned through tens of millions of dollars, yet no script was ever finalized.
The announcement’s highlight was the involvement of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her work on Fleabag and Killing Eve. She expressed excitement for the character, stating, “Lara means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ’n all.”
However, sources now state that the show’s prospects have dimmed considerably, with confirmations that it is “not going ahead”. Neither Amazon nor Waller-Bridge’s team has provided a formal comment regarding this cancellation.
This isn’t the first time the production faced challenges; delays in scriptwriting have been attributed to Waller-Bridge’s workload—despite a lucrative $20 million per year contract with Amazon since 2019.
The betrayal of promises and financial waste without tangible results leaves many questioning Amazon’s future with the franchise. Jennifer Salke, who initially greenlit the project, has departed Amazon Studios as well. She previously shared, “We think it’s going to be a huge franchise for us”—a statement now seeming increasingly hollow as Tomb Raider enters yet another phase of uncertainty.
