Steam Players Favor Noncompetitive Titles Over Consoles, Study Shows

A report reveals that Steam users are increasingly gravitating towards noncompetitive games compared to their console counterparts.

In popular belief, gamers are often seen as warriors focused on achieving victory in competitive games, whether in shooters or MOBAs. However, Steam players are showing increasing interest in noncompetitive gameplay. According to analysts, data indicates that users on Steam prefer noncompetitive games more than console gamers, a trend that continues to grow.

In a recent 2025 study by market research firm Newzoo, over one million players were surveyed to gauge gaming behaviors across platforms. The findings indicate that 58% of games enjoyed by Steam users in 2024 were noncompetitive PvE titles, contrasting with 42% for PlayStation and 41% for Xbox users.

The preference for PvE games among Steam players has increased steadily since 2021, when it first measured at 47%. The allure of** social-oriented games** is suggested as a significant factor in this shift, especially with breakout hits like Helldivers 2 and Lethal Company gaining popularity.

The rise in interest for PvE games could also be attributed to Steam’s accessibility for indie developers, leading to a rich variety of unique titles that cater to diverse gaming preferences. However, it is crucial to note that Newzoo’s survey does not factor in gaming participation from markets such as China and India, both of which represent substantial segments of the gaming community.

Moreover, the data has shown a more dramatic trend among Steam users—particularly those who play multiple titles within a year exhibit a marked increase in enjoying PvE games, which are often supported by dedicated communities online.

For those who delve deep into gaming experiences, PC games remain the leading choice for enthusiastic players.
