The Molasses Flood has officially merged with CD Projekt Red. Originally purchased in 2021, this Boston-based studio is known for developing Project Sirius, a multiplayer game set in the Witcher universe.
Initially introduced in 2022, alongside a remake of Witcher 1 and The Witcher 4, Project Sirius was promoted as primarily a single-player experience enhanced with multiplayer features. Unfortunately, details about its development have been sparse since then, as the game has reportedly faced development challenges leading to a restart of the project in 2023. A significant reduction of the team occurred last year when 29 employees were let go from The Molasses Flood, with the title currently still in pre-production.
Recently, the integration of The Molasses Flood into CD Projekt Red was announced to better focus on the project’s alignment and direction. In a public statement, co-founder Damian Isla characterized the merger as “the end of an era” while indicating it could benefit the studio in the long run.
With the ongoing reports about the status of Project Sirius, it appears that the game is still a considerable way from its launch. Meanwhile, other Witcher-related projects within CD Projekt Red are reportedly progressing much more smoothly. Notably, The Witcher 4 entered production early last year, employing over 400 developers. However, it remains uncertain when this highly anticipated title will be available, with forecasts suggesting a possible release in 2027. This new installment will shift the narrative perspective, featuring Ciri as the protagonist rather than Geralt of Rivia, promising a different gameplay experience.
