Potential Limitations for Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games

Nintendo's new Switch 2 Edition games might not come with physical upgrades included in the cartridge, raising questions among fans.

Nintendo is launching a range of enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition versions of beloved Switch games, but significant questions remain regarding whether these physical editions will contain the upgrades directly on the cartridge. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 promises a host of exclusive titles while remaining compatible with original Switch games. Notably, some first-generation Switch titles are set to receive enhancements on the new console.

The recent Nintendo Direct event showcased several original Switch titles slated for upgrade, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Despite the excitement, there are persistent uncertainties about the physical editions of these Switch 2 Edition games.

Text on the cover art indicates that the Switch 2 Edition boxes will include “the Nintendo Switch game and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack.” This has led many gamers to speculate that the Switch 2 Edition games might come with a Switch 1 cartridge accompanied by a download code for the Switch 2 upgrade. However, customer support representatives have made contradicting statements. In one instance, they confirmed that the Switch 2 Edition games will actually contain download codes for the upgrades. In another instance, they stated that all content would be on the new Switch 2 Edition cartridge. If further clarification is provided by Nintendo, this article will be updated accordingly.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - June 5
