EA's Origin Platform to Shut Down Following Microsoft's Phase-Out of 32-bit Support

Electronic Arts (EA) announces the imminent closure of its Origin platform, citing Microsoft's decision to discontinue 32-bit Windows support.

Electronic Arts (EA) recently announced the closure of its Origin platform, which will officially take place on April 17, 2025. This move aligns with Microsoft’s decision to stop supporting 32-bit software, positioning the EA App as the sole option for gamers on newer systems.

The transition from Origin to the EA App began in 2020, but Origin has continued to operate, primarily because it functioned on 32-bit systems, while EA’s new platform necessitates a 64-bit operating system.

In a statement, EA clarified: “If you use Origin, you need to upgrade to the EA app, which requires a 64-bit version of Windows.” As a result, Origin users may face challenges if they are unable to upgrade their systems, as the EA App will not support 32-bit versions.

The shift signifies a pivotal moment for gamers with older machines, as Microsoft and EA’s recent changes herald a shift away from legacy software. EA has advised users to ensure their account data and games migrate to the EA App—though users should be cautious, as modifying installed mods may lead to complications.

The longevity of the Origin platform spanned 14 years, and while it may not have been universally cherished, it served a dedicated user base. The decision to phase it out reflects an overarching trend in the gaming industry, prioritizing modern compatibility over maintaining older systems.
