Animal Crossing: New Horizons Now Allows Island Transfers to the Switch 2
Nintendo confirmed that players can smoothly transfer their islands from the original Switch to the upcoming Switch 2, while losing some access to data.
Summary
Nintendo’s developer, Takuhiro Dohta, stated that the system transfer for the Nintendo Switch 2 will incorporate data from Animal Crossing: New Horizons—including the migration process of islands.
Key Points
- During the transfer to the Switch 2, players will retain most game save data from their original Switch.
- Post-transfer, the original console will lose access to the Animal Crossing: New Horizons island data.
Originally launched in March 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons became a significant title at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, letting players connect and share experiences, despite not having significant updates since November 2022. The game has sold over 47.44 million copies, ranking it as the second-best-selling Nintendo Switch game, only behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Islands in Transition
The Switch 2’s transfer setup will not necessitate additional apps or cloud saves. However, keep in mind that transferring will only work when both consoles are in proximity. Also, sufficient storage space on the Switch 2, which will have a built-in 256GB capacity, is essential for the transfer without loss of data.

Note: It’s ambiguous whether the Island Transfer app will be compatible with the Switch 2. Despite the lack of a dedicated Switch 2 edition at this point, moving islands should be simpler than ever.
