Alienware has gained notoriety for creating flashy systems that often limit upgrade options. At this year’s CES, there was optimism with the launch of their fully upgradeable Area-51 desktop. However, it turns out this upgradeability comes with a catch: it requires an additional $35 conversion kit.
The conversion kit, available for purchase on Dell’s site, includes not just a power switch wiring cable, but also a fan power bridge wiring cable, a USB dongle extension, and some miscellaneous fasteners. This kit is essential for integrating third-party motherboards into the Area-51 chassis, allowing features such as AlienFX lighting and custom fan controls to remain functional.
Importantly, users must also buy a new power supply if they do not opt for an ATX12VO motherboard.
For owners of older Area-51 machines, it’s worth noting that this new kit won’t be compatible, as it is designed specifically for the new models.
Despite this complexity, Alienware’s new desktop configuration provides enhanced cooling and quieter performance compared to its predecessors, thanks to innovations aimed at promoting better airflow.
Overall, while these rigs present appealing features and the promise of modular upgrades, the reality of needing extra components can dampen the initial excitement.
