Bizarre Crossovers: Fatal Fury Introduces Swedish DJ as Playable Character

In a surprising twist for the fighting game genre, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves features Salvatore Ganacci, a lesser-known DJ, as a playable character.

Fighting games are known for their unusual crossovers, such as Tekken 7 featuring Final Fantasy 15’s Noctis and Mortal Kombat 11’s inclusion of the Terminator. Now, the new game Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will feature Salvatore Ganacci, a Bosnian-Swedish DJ, as a playable character. This reveal comes alongside the unexpected announcement of soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo also becoming part of the roster.

The reveal trailer showcases Ganacci’s desire to be in a video game from a young age, humorously presented in a classroom setting where his peers mock him for this ambition. Later, the trailer takes a surreal turn when a genie appears and grants his wish, leading to a brief glimpse of his in-game character.

Ganacci isn’t just appearing in the game; he’s also composing the original score alongside other DJs for the fighting platform. His addition raises questions about the intentions and direction of SNK, especially considering the company’s ownership ties to Saudi Arabia under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known for controversial actions including alleged complicity in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi Arabia has been investing heavily in esports and gaming, aiming to position itself as a hub for these activities, although such moves have sparked debates related to sportswashing and the erosion of grassroots gaming culture.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is set to release on April 24, 2025, questioning whether characters like an unknown DJ and a professional soccer player can hold their ground in a competitive fighting game landscape.
