Director of A Minecraft Movie Expresses Interest in Sequel: 'The World is Infinite'

Director Jared Hess highlights the potential for a sequel to A Minecraft Movie, fueled by the vastness of the Minecraft universe.

A Minecraft Movie has officially premiered with varying reviews, and its extensive promotion can be seen everywhere, from store shelves to Happy Meals at McDonald’s. Hollywood executives are eager for its box office performance.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, director Jared Hess revealed his enthusiasm for a potential sequel. “Oh, it’d be so much fun,” he declared. “Yeah, I mean, look, the world’s infinite, so many amazing mods and characters and biomes we haven’t explored yet, so it’d be amazing.”

The film immerses viewers in the expansive world of Minecraft, where four ordinary humans must rely on the in-game character Steve (voiced by Jack Black) to navigate challenges.

While the storyline unfolds primarily in the recognizable Minecraft overworld, certain aspects, like the Nether, are explored, leaving room for future adventures. Many iconic game characters, such as witches, were absent from this iteration.

In summary, Hess finds the Piglins—the film’s antagonists—fascinating. “I’m obsessed with the Piglins,” Hess stated. “They’re super gnarly and funny and gross and strange, and I love their weird barbarian culture. They’re cannibals. They’re obsessed with gold, and I just thought that they would be such fun villains.”

Overall, critics like Elie Gould from PC Gamer appreciate the film’s portrayal of Minecraft, despite its child-friendly tone. “A Minecraft Movie probably isn’t the serious storytelling that some players want, but it’ll make you laugh a couple of times,” said Gould, hinting at the rekindled nostalgia for the game.
