Arkane's Raphael Colantonio Steps Back from System Shock Remake Over Gameplay Challenges

Raphael Colantonio, the founder of Arkane Studios, expresses his disappointment after abandoning the 2023 System Shock remake, citing its complex cyberspace gameplay as "too hard."

Raphael Colantonio, the mastermind behind Arkane Studios, whose name is notably linked to iconic immersive sims, has opened up about his decision to pull away from the System Shock remake. He voiced his frustration after struggling with intricate cyberspace sequences during a recent episode of the Quad Damage Podcast.

“I tried the one that came out a year or two ago. I got stuck in cyberspace. That gameplay was too hard. I was frustrated by it. But the rest was really cool, until then.” (Translation: Colantonio highlights the gameplay’s complexity as a barrier to enjoyment.)

Best known for founding Arkane and leading projects such as Arx Fatalis and Dishonored, Colantonio recalled his experience with the original System Shock, which has long influenced his passion for immersive games. Yet, in an unexpected twist, he confessed that the latest remaster didn’t resonate with him, largely due to its gameplay issues.

In an industry where gameplay experience drives success, Colantonio’s candid remarks reflect not only his dedication to quality experience but also the challenges that can accompany title remakes.
