Nintendo Announces a Live-Action Zelda Trilogy Coming in 2027

Nintendo has revealed a release date for its highly anticipated live-action Zelda movie, set for 2027 and reportedly part of a trilogy.

At the latest Nintendo Direct, a new smartphone app called Nintendo Today debuted, functioning as a calendar and news feed for all things related to Mario, Zelda, and Pikmin. Surprisingly, the app provided the release date for the eagerly awaited Legend of Zelda movie: March 26, 2027.

Having heard whispers about a Zelda movie for ages, it’s surreal to see a genuine release date confirmed. As mentioned by VGC, according to Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman (behind a paywall), the cast is signed on for three films filled with Hyrulean adventures.

Though such news should be taken with caution, the excitement is palpable. Just imagine the challenge of adapting Zelda’s anime-inspired visual style to live action. While the game’s narratives aren’t typically sprawling enough to demand a trilogy, I remain optimistic until we see the final product. It’s hard to envision a version of this film that won’t at least be entertaining, even if it mirrors the not-so-favorable qualities of previous Mario adaptations.

But whether the film even gets made remains uncertain. Numerous game adaptations seem perpetually in development, like Watch Dogs, BioShock, and Metal Gear Solid. Despite the mixed history of video game movies, the genre has produced some decent adaptations, but unfortunately, remains often filled with poor quality films. As enthusiasm for this iconic series continues to thrive, it will be interesting to see how this venture pans out.
