You thought climbing a mountain in a cauldron was tough? Try doing it barefoot.
The new walking simulator Baby Steps, published by Devolver and developed by Foddy, Gabe Cuzzillo, and Maxi Boch, will be even more challenging when it’s released later this year.
“I believe the toughest parts, which are completely optional, are significantly harder than Getting Over It by quite some distance,” Foddy remarked during a hands-on session at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last week.
The game’s controls are straightforward—move forward with the left stick, lifting and placing each foot with the trigger buttons—but the environment is no walk in the park. One minor misstep can send you tumbling down the cliff you labored to climb for an hour.
Fortunately, Baby Steps isn’t entirely designed to be excessively difficult.
“To experience the full narrative and finish the game is genuinely much more attainable for most players,” Foddy stated. “This is all about allowing players to ease their way through at their own pace.”
Foddy added, “You see something that seems challenging, you can just walk past it, and there shouldn’t be too many regrets. This is not a game about completionism.”
