The Transformation of the Windows XP 'Bliss' Hill: From Grassy Knoll to Vineyard

A look at the iconic Windows XP wallpaper location and its current state.

The famous Windows XP wallpaper, known as ‘Bliss’, depicted a serene green hill under a blue sky with fluffy clouds. This iconic image was captured in 1996 by photographer Charles O’Rear. The hill is located in Sonoma County, California and is reportedly real. The area, once covered with rolling grasses, has now transitioned into a vineyard.

According to Instagram account Inside History, a series of follow-up photos of the hill from 2006, 2020, 2024, and the most recent from 2025 reveal its transformation into a vineyard. As of 2025, the vineyard status persists.

In 2021, Sonoma County produced about 24 million bottles of wine, as noted in the Sonoma Wine Grape Annual report.

Microsoft ended support for Windows XP in 2014, marking the end of an era for this beloved operating system but leaving behind the legacy of its striking imagery.
