The Success of Caves of Qud: A Reflection on 17 Years of Development

The developers of Caves of Qud express disbelief at the game's success after nearly two decades of work and share their journey to a full release.

Caves of Qud is truly a remarkable video game, heralded as the best roguelike of 2024. This unique title allows players to ponder the best configurations for limbs in gameplay, while co-creators Jason Grinblat and Brian Buckley share their thoughts at a recent gaming conference regarding their long journey to complete the game.

In discussing the game’s full release after 17 years, Grinblat remarked on the surreal nature of the attention and respect it received, questioning, “Did you play the right game?” Buckley chimed in with a sentiment of disbelief about their player base growth, reflecting, “More people have bought Caves of Qud than fit in this stadium. How do you reckon with that?”

Even after their extensive work, they are still excited about future expansions. Grinblat shared that while the finale of this chapter feels monumental, they continue to adapt to their expanding player community. Buckley humorously added, “No more of that until we’re 65. That’s the end of it for us.”

Caves of Qud continues to evolve, promising more excitement for both its developers and players alike.
