GitHub Welcomes AlexNet Source Code, Pioneering AI Technology Released by Google

Google and the Computer History Museum have collaboratively made the 2012 source code for AlexNet available on GitHub, marking a significant contribution to AI development.

In 2025, a significant milestone for artificial intelligence has been achieved as the source code for AlexNet, one of the first modern neural networks, has been published on GitHub by Google in collaboration with the Computer History Museum. This initiative aims to make the foundational technology accessible for educational and research purposes, showcasing the evolution of AI that started gaining traction in the early 2010s.

AlexNet Source Code

AI, particularly deep learning, has transformed significantly since AlexNet’s inception. The neural network’s architecture has paved the way for various advancements in image recognition and machine learning technologies. Hinton noted the teamwork involved: “Ilya thought we should do it, Alex made it work, and I got the Nobel Prize.

The released code is referred to as “AlexNet source code as it was in 2012”, which serves as a historic marker in the field of artificial intelligence. The availability of this code could foster further innovations and understanding of AI systems.

Additionally, the importance of large datasets and high computational power necessary for training these models has been emphasized in the journey of AI’s development, leading to a surge in applications across various sectors today.
