HP Reaches Settlement in Lawsuit Over Printer Updates

HP's class-action lawsuit surrounding its printer updates is now settled, allowing certain users to opt-out without admitting wrongdoing.

HP has settled a class action lawsuit that claimed its printer updates acted like malware by restricting the use of third-party ink.

Some HP printer owners will have the option to decline a security update that previously barred non-HP ink usage. This case originated from a firmware update in November 2020 that changed printer compatibility rules, causing many owners unexpected issues. While HP resolved the lawsuit without admitting any wrongdoing, they have agreed to pay $5,000 to each of the three class representatives.

Patients of the lawsuit should find full details regarding which models can now actively decline these updates on HP’s support page.
