Microsoft Reveals DirectX Raytracing 1.2, Claims Significant Performance Enhancements
Microsoft has unveiled its latest DirectX Raytracing 1.2 framework, boasting substantial performance improvements, though many features may already be found in Nvidia's existing RTX graphics cards.
Microsoft recently showcased DirectX Raytracing 1.2 at the GDC conference, claiming it offers game-changing performance enhancements. Among its advancements, Microsoft emphasizes speed improvements up to 2.3x for path-traced games thanks to new technologies such as opacity micromaps (OMM) and shader execution reordering (SER).
However, it’s important to note that Nvidia’s existing RTX GPUs already include these features. This suggests that while Microsoft’s announcement is significant, the real impacts may not be as revolutionary as presented.
Notably, Intel has expressed intentions to support SER in future releases, and while AMD’s plans remain unclear, it’s evident that existing Nvidia RTX hardware already benefits from these enhancements. The emphasis on accelerating ray-tracing performance may favor Nvidia’s continued market dominance in this domain.
