Wizards of the Coast Revives Classic Magic: The Gathering with Tarkir: Dragonstorm

The new Tarkir: Dragonstorm set caters to those who yearn for the traditional lore of Magic: The Gathering, featuring dragons and epic fantasy themes.

No, it’s not a How to Train Your Dragon crossover.

The last few years of Magic: The Gathering have seen numerous crossovers, such as those with Fallout and Middle-earth, alongside unique sets like the adorable animals of Bloomburrow and the grand prix race of Aetherdrift. Given how well these sets have performed in sales, it’s clear that they have resonated with players. However, many fans have expressed a desire to return to Magic’s classic lore.

The latest set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, fulfills this demand by highlighting the quintessential fantasy creatures and revisiting a setting first introduced in 2014’s Khans of Tarkir. This world features five khanates, influenced by various East or Central Asian cultures, entangled in conflicts with almighty Dragon Lords, perpetuated by a magic storm that continually produces new dragons.

Recent expansions have hinted at this return to Tarkir, with cards like the dragonhawk making appearances in the otherwise quaint Bloomburrow, and dragons emerging from mysterious storms during the Ghirapur Grand Prix in Aetherdrift. While I’m not always enthusiastic about Magic’s narrative, it’s fascinating how details of one set can foreshadow upcoming events in future releases.

In a fascinating turn of events, the five khanates collaborated long enough to conduct a supernatural ritual to dethrone the Dragon Lords using spirit dragons summoned from the dragonstorm. Now that the Dragon Lords have been overthrown, the storm is overflowing with dragons across the planes, causing beloved characters like the archangel Elspeth to venture to Tarkir to investigate the chaos.

New Players & Lore Updates We will see how well players respond to this return to the rich lore of Magic once Tarkir: Dragonstorm launches digitally on Arena on April 8 and physically on April 11, with pre-release events running from April 4-10.
