Jagex Faces Backlash Over Runescape Price Survey Suggesting Major Changes
The Runescape community voices strong discontent with Jagex after a survey hints at significant price increases and service degradation for non-paying players.
Less than six months after angering its community by raising the price of Runescape, Jagex has done it again with a new player survey asking for opinions on potential major changes to the game’s pricing and feature set. Jagex insists that the survey is merely “research,” but responses have flooded in, resembling “cow shit in a hurricane.”
The survey, highlighted on Reddit, proposed several membership tiers for both Runescape and Old School Runescape, many of which would see price increases compared to the current structure. Jagex has reassured players that any future adjustments will not affect gameplay fairness or the accessibility of in-game content, but some suggested changes like shorter AFK timers and in-game ads have raised significant eyebrows.
Some of the membership options outlined in the survey are quite costly. For instance, the most expensive plan—providing access to both versions of the game with various extra features—would cost around $32.49 per month, or over $350 annually if paid upfront.
Overall reactions to the survey have been overwhelmingly negative, with players vocalizing their frustrations on platforms such as Reddit. As an example, one Reddit user stated, “Jagex, you have just messed up and caused irreparable harm,” reflecting a common sentiment among long-time players.
In a recent statement, Jagex described the survey process as part of a long-term dialogue with players, aimed at gathering feedback before any concrete decisions are made. Despite Jagex’s promises to keep a focus on community values, speculation persists regarding the inclusion of ads and paid player support in the future.
Currently, Jagex is working to manage the backlash while promising further updates as developments arise.
