Game Developers Union Protests at Industry Event for Change
The United Videogame Workers union demonstrated for worker rights during the Game Developers Conference, pushing for significant changes within the industry.
The United Videogame Workers made their presence felt at the Game Developers Conference, calling for better conditions and fair treatment within the gaming industry. In a vibrant march to a local park, attendees rallied in support of their newly established union, emphasizing that the organization is focused on taking concrete actions and fostering meaningful changes in the industry.
An enthusiastic crowd voiced their demands with chants like:
“We’re not playing anymore; we demand a living wage.”
The union is affiliated with the Communication Workers of America, which has been mobilizing developers across various gaming companies, including significant players like Activision Blizzard and ZeniMax.
Melanie Barron commented on the rally, stating, “We wanted to demonstrate that what we’re building with United Videogame Workers is a union about taking action and organizing change in the industry.”
Barron highlighted the alarming trends of layoffs and overwork in the industry, noting that many workers are seeking support and mechanisms for recourse against discrimination and unfair treatment.
From the crowd, another participant captured the sentiments shared:
“We make these games, not fucking AI, and not the fucking executives.”
The movement aims to mobilize as many individuals as possible to transform the industry by respecting the talent and hard work that goes into game development.
