Hasbro’s venture into the virtual tabletop realm with Sigil faces significant hurdles as it appears to be in jeopardy. Reports indicate that more than 30 developers have been laid off, representing 90% of the team responsible for Sigil. The platform had a rocky start, launching in a somewhat incomplete state despite showing potential, particularly with its map creator.
However, lofty system requirements and a cumbersome integration with D&D Beyond led to criticisms about its niche appeal compared to more user-friendly options. Andy Collins, formerly a senior writer at Wizards of the Coast, confirmed in a LinkedIn post that he, along with a majority of the team, was let go, indicating the precarious nature of the venture.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t get to continue working toward the full experience that we imagined, but happy for the opportunity to work on an intriguing challenge with so many smart and dedicated folks. I wish my former colleagues success in their future endeavors. I’ll also be pulling for the crew left behind who’ll do their best to keep improving and iterating the experience we shipped last month.”
This turn of events casts a shadow over the future of the virtual tabletop, and with only a handful of developers remaining, prospects for its continued development seem bleak. For more information, check Sigil’s initial announcement.
