Game Developers Unite: A New Era for Workers in North America

A collective effort is underway to empower video game workers through the newly formed United Videogame Workers, affiliated with the Communications Workers of America.

Videogame workers all over North America have united to form a new association named United Videogame Workers—CWA, which is a branch of the Communications Workers of America. This union offers a way for individuals in various roles like artists, designers, and programmers to come together to exert their influence regardless of their employer or job situation.

The union’s objectives include fostering community and support among videogame professionals as well as launching educational initiatives about labor organization in the gaming sector. A primary focus of the new union is addressing job instability, as one in ten developers faced layoffs in 2024, following a tumultuous 2023.

“Job instability looms over us all as corporate greed drives mass layoffs, studio closures, and acquisitions that threaten our workplaces. AI is also a concern, risking the devaluation of our skills and replacing us with tools derived from the work we do,” as stated by the UVW-CWA.

The announcement aligns with the ongoing 2025 Game Developers Conference, during which UVW-CWA is hosting a panel titled “Videogame Labor at a Crossroads: New Pathways to Industry-Wide Organizing” and will circulate a petition to gather support for their unionization efforts.
