Six EA and Codemasters games have recently been removed from Steam without prior notice, leaving many players bewildered. These titles, originally developed and/or published by Codemasters, were absorbed into the EA umbrella a few years back.
As one of the oldest British game development studios, Codemasters has a reputation forged through racing titles like Grid and Dirt, along with licensed games such as the F1 series. With EA’s acquisition of Codemasters in 2021, it gained control over an extensive back-catalog. Recently, however, the removal of several older Codemasters titles from Steam has raised questions about how EA is managing the licensing of these classic games.
Affected Titles
- Damnation
- Hospital Tycoon
- Maelstrom: The Battle for Earth Begins
- Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
- Rise of the Argonauts
- Toybox Turbos
While all of these games were released before EA’s takeover of Codemasters, the removal has sparked worries regarding the handling of older game licenses by the publisher. As of now, no official statements have been made by either EA or Codemasters regarding the reasons behind the removals or the possibility of these games being made available again on Steam in the future.
These titles have also been listed on GOG’s Dreamlist, indicating a player-driven demand for their preservation.
