2024 Marks Steam's Peak Year for New Game Sales: Don't Rush to Call This the End of an Era
Valve reports 2024 as the best year ever for Steam in terms of users purchasing newly launched games, while cautioning against prematurely concluding the era of 'forever games.'
Valve has announced that 2024 has proven to be the best year yet for customers purchasing new releases on Steam. In its ‘Steam Year In Review’ report, it highlighted that the peak concurrent user count is nearly double what it was back in March 2020. Furthermore, the revenue generated from new releases has reached levels ten times higher than those seen in 2014.
“2024 was the Steam platform’s best year ever in terms of customers buying newly released games,” said Valve. Translation: 2024 fue el mejor año en la plataforma de Steam en lo que respecta a la compra de juegos recién lanzados.
In total, over 500 games made more than $250,000 in initial sales, with more than 200 titles surpassing a million dollars. However, it’s important to note that while the new releases garnered impressive results, Valve is reminding stakeholders that previous patterns do not necessarily indicate a shift away from the so-called ‘forever games.’ New metrics suggest that live services remain a significant revenue generator.
